Documents & Essentials

The things you cannot buy at the airport. Tuck them into your carry-on, not your checked bag.

  • Passport — check the expiry date before you book
  • Photo ID and driver's licence
  • Travel and health insurance cards
  • Prescription medications in their original bottles
  • Credit cards, plus some pesos in cash for small shops and taxis
  • Phone and charging cables — Mexico uses the same plugs and voltage as the US and Canada, so no adapter is needed
  • Reef-safe sunscreen; the island asks visitors to avoid oxybenzone and octinoxate formulas
  • Insect repellent for the evenings
  • Sunglasses, a hat, and a reusable water bottle

For the Water

Diving, Snorkeling & the Sandbar

  • Swimwear and a rash guard for long snorkel days
  • Snorkel mask — you can rent one here, but your own fits better
  • Water shoes for rocky entries and the sandbar
  • Dry bag to keep phones and wallets safe on the boat
  • Underwater phone case or a small camera
  • Motion-sickness tablets before boat trips out to El Cielo
  • Dive certification card and logbook if you plan to scuba

For the Evenings

Dinners, Town & Slow Days

  • Light layers — air conditioning runs strong indoors
  • Dressy-casual outfits for dinner out
  • Comfortable walking shoes for town, the ruins and market days
  • A small rain jacket during the rainy season (May to October)
  • A day bag for beach clubs and ferry days
  • Books, cards and anything for slow afternoons on the balcony
